Hi! I'm Doris and this blog is a requirement for my music course at the University of Alaska Fairbanks where I'm majoring in psychology. I'm a lifelong Alaskan and my husband and I have three children and one grandson.

I don't currently play any instruments but did play the violin when I was in elementary school. I still have my violin and sometimes think about taking it out and learning to play it again.

 

I listen to all kinds of music. My favorite place to listen to music is in my car while driving on a long trip. I like to listen to classical music while reading and studying. I guess the genre depends on what I'm doing. And I absolutely love to listen to live music. We most recently attended Salmonfest in Ninilchik and the bands we listened to were amazing.  One was a young lady named Vella who had an amazing voice. She was discovered on Tik Tok and is now recording her first album in Los Angeles. Here she is:

    I love hearing live music too! There is a local band called Shag that plays every year at the end of the Tanna Valley State Fair and my friends and I go dancing there. Also At New years they usually have live music playing at Ivory Jacks and I go there with my family to dance in the new year.

Musical Analysis #2

  James Taylor is one of my husband’s favorite singers. His songs always bring a sense of calm to us both. A song that we each favor is “Fire and Rain”.  When listening to this song, I feel comforted by the guitar chords. Another comforting aspect of James Taylor's music is his voice. Even though the lyrics are melancholy, his voice makes me feel like everything is going to be fine. Taylor is naturally soft spoken so when he sings, his voice takes on a lilting affect. It was interesting to research the meaning of the lyrics after listening to and singing this song hundreds of times. I realize, once again, that I didn’t really know what it was about. An NPR article about Fire and Rain states that the song has three verses. One is about a friend named Suzanne who he found out had committed suicide, another is about Taylor's addiction to heroin and he’s asking Jesus for help, the third refers to a mental hospital and a band Taylor started called The Flying Machine.   Musical Analysis #1 – Purple Rain by Prince I’ve always been one of Prince’s biggest fans. My all-time favorite song by him is Purple Rain. When I listen to it, the lyrics and him playing the guitar solo at the end is something that has brought tears to my eyes. As I listened to it many times for this assignment, the music and lyrics made me think of people simply loving each other and being cleansed and rejuvenated by the rain. Purple Rain was written by Prince and Wendy Melvoin who was part of “the Revolution”.   Back then they were called Prince and the Revolution. Its genre falls into three categories: Pop, Rock and R&B. Interesting fact I learned - this was the final song Prince ever performed live.   Lyrics When asked what the song was about, Prince responded “When there’s blood in the sky – red and blue = purple…purple rain pertains to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith/god guide you through the purple rain.”...
